In attendance: Gary Webber (President), Kathy Heppert (Vice President), Joanna Kuczera (Treasurer), Clint Idol (Secretary), Paula Kellogg, Faye Hale, Matthew Paul, Marlene Merrill, and Jeanne Peas.

Guest Sarah Bromley (outreach coordinator for KU Big Event): April 14 10am-2pm, KU Big Event. Helping as many in Lawrence as possible. 3000 – 4000 volunteer service event that aims to give back to the community by providing services at 200-300 homes/jobsites. Go to Bigeventku.com to register. Volunteer helpers may use power tools. The service is available to any Lawrence resident.

Old Business

  • LAN update (Webber): New set of officers elected – see LAN Updates 2018-02-27doc on Dropbox and the SHNA Winter Newsletter
  • Slate of Executive Committee for 2018

3 new EC members are needed. Terms are ending for Clint, Susie, and Kathy. Invites are being posted to Nextdoor and will be presented at the SHNA Annual Meeting, as well as an upcoming PTO meeting.

  • Rockledge Traffic Calming update (Idol)

25 city ballots were mailed with self addressed stamped envelopes to owners of property within 300 feet of the proposed traffic calming devices. 8 voted  yes and 3 voted no to speed cushions for Rockledge Rd between 6th and 9th Streets. 14 Residents abstained. The Rockledge traffic calming project was taken off of the city list for 2018 due to insufficient votes. City Engineers reported that the city traffic calming policy is changing, and that there is currently a moratorium on incoming traffic calming requests.

  • Plan for Annual Meeting, 7pm, April 16, 2018

West Middle School Cafeteria has been reserved. Enter through northeast door. Sign needs to be placed on south door. Cookies and lemonade to be provided by SHNA. EC is working on a new flier to be posted to the website and social media with mention of refreshments, time and date, web address.

Gary inviting Neighborhood Resource Officer Fennely and Derek Smith,  Commissioner Jennifer Ananda and a City Engineer to address gutters and curbs. Marlene and Joanna to handle registration. Jeanne and Paula to handle refreshments.

  • April 23 SHNA EC meeting will be held at 6pm at Gary’s
  • Plan for Neighborhood cleanup, April 21, 2018 (all day) with notifications via the usual routes, plus possibly on the SH Elementary marquee and the sunspots newsletter. National Honors Society student volunteers.
  • Plan for SHNA Potluck, May 5, 2018 – 6pm? -Centennial Park (southeast) shelter house. $40 rental. Alcohol permit will not be pursued.
  • Web Site (Paul): 12-13 unique visits per day. Around 400 visits during peak month (Jan). Past minutes and newsletters uploaded. Working currently on officers, titles, group photo + short paragraph on the EC. Photos needed: parks, mini-libraries, personal photos.

Motion made to discontinue SHNA facebook page. Seconded and motion passes. Clare Doveton may be the only one with credentials.

New Business

  • KU Big Event, April 16
  • Annual SHNA meeting invitation updates. None proposed other than current dates and location
  • Sidewalk Hazard Repair Policy & Housing Needs Survey email to members – to be included in neighborhood newsletter
  • Voting at Monthly LAN Meetings: The EC discussed a policy for voting on controversial issues at monthly LAN meetings. It was decided that if the Sunset Hill representative attending the LAN meeting is confident that the action being considered would be supported by SHNA, if proposed for our neighborhood, the representative would vote yes. Conversely, if the representative is confident our members would not support the action, if it were proposed for our neighborhood, the representative would vote no. If the representative is unsure, they would abstain from the vote.
    • Letter from LAN to Planning Commission opposing the Crestline Apartment rezoning
    • Letter from LAN to City Commission opposing Sidewalk Hazard Repair Policy
  • Emails and photos of officers and board for Web site
  • New agenda items from EC:
    • financial report to be emailed to membership.
  • Bob Lichtwardt’s passing: Jeanne coordinating card and $25 donation to the Robert W Lichtwardt Student Research Award. Motion made, seconded and passed to complete card and donation.
