Meeting Minutes

  • Participants: Eliza Darmon, Faye Hale, Joanna Kuczera, Mariana Nieto, Paula Kellogg, Matthew Paul, Jeanne Pees, Gary Webber
  • Treasurer’s Report (Kuczera) – SHNA has a current balance of $1025.87, and 94 members.
  • Old Business
    • LAN update (Webber)
      • Webber summarized the March and April meetings. In March four speakers discussed the upcoming sales tax referendum.  In April, Mayor Boley discussed the 56% rental rate in Schwegler neighborhood.  He believes the city commission should discuss ways to limit student rentals by encouraging home ownership.
      • 19th Street – discussion continues on the city’s plan to extend 19th to the east. Adjacent neighborhoods are not in favor of this extension.  The city plans to renovate and extend 19th in 2018.
      • Sidewalks – The inspection-based Sidewalk Hazard Repair Policy will begin in January, 2019. City commissioners have asked for the support of advocacy groups to allocate adequate funding for this project.  The city manager’s proposed budget will be presented in June.
    • Plan for SHNA Potluck, May 5, 2018 – Paul will talk to Biemer’s and Biggs to get quotes on barbecue sandwiches for 50 people. He will report to EC via email.
    • Discussion of annual meeting – The venue worked well, we will reserve it for 2019. Webber will investigate a sound system for the 2019 meeting.  Webber asked about printing more agendas, EC did not believe it was necessary.
    • Web Site report (Paul) – No issues, Paul will continue to improve the content. Webber will upload the latest membership list to the SHNA Dropbox so that Paul can update exec@sunsethills.org.
  • New Business
    • Election of Officers – The following slate was elected:
      • Gary Webber – President
      • Matthew Paul – Vice President
      • Clint Idol – Secretary
      • Joanna Kuczera – Treasurer
    • Discussion of 2018 goals of SHNA
      • Adoption of Centennial Park? – SHNA member Phyllis Farrar will organize a trial cleanup this summer. If 10 residents volunteer to clean the park, and the cleanup is successful, the EC will consider adopting Centennial at the August meeting.
      • Rental Property letter or annual meeting flyer? –The EC decided to hand-deliver an annual meeting flyer in March, 2019. During the 2019 fiscal year we will send a rental property owner letter and a business letter.
      • Creation of Land Use Committee – Pees suggest we form a Land Use Committee to monitor development in our neighborhood. Webber offered to serve in this capacity since he already monitored city planning.
    • Group Photo of EC for web site – deferred until August meeting.
    • New agenda items from participants
      • We will photocopy the annual meeting flyer in October during the sale.
      • Kuczera suggested we invite the Applause Award committee to the August meeting.
      • Webber will write an article about the Welcome Packet committee for the Spring newsletter and recruit volunteers to help Paula Kellogg.
      • Pees and Nieto will collaborate to interview a SH business for an article in an upcoming newsletter.
      • Webber will write articles on neighborhood churches in future editions of the newsletter.
      • Webber will take photos of the West Middle School garden and The Merc for the “Best Neighborhood in Kansas” nomination.
