Meeting Minutes

  1. Welcome and introductions of 2020-2021 Executive Committee:

    1. Summary of 2020 SHNA Executive Committee actions
      1. Presented 9 Applause Awards
      2. Published SHNA quarterly newsletter
      3. Volunteers cleaned Centennial Park and Ludlam Park 3 times (Farrar report)
      4. Donated $50 each to Sunset Hill Elementary and West Middle School gardens
      5. Worked with Public Works to advocate for street maintenance
      6. Worked with West Middle school to eliminate traffic stopping on Crestline between Yale and Harvard for after-school pickup
      7. Hosted Rainey Group at EC meeting to present mini-warehouse proposed for Yale Rd and Centennial Rd.
      8. Appeared before the Planning Commission and the City Commission to oppose the mini-warehouse proposal
      9. Conducted surveys to list and prioritize traffic safety concerns in Sunset Hill
      10. Conducted first ever Business Membership Drive
      11. Hand-delivered 21 “Welcome Neighbor” packets to new property owners
      12. Attended monthly Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods (LAN) meetings
      13. Picked up tree branches from Ludlam Park
    2. Election of Nominees to SHNA Executive Committee: The EC nominated the following slate:
      1. The EC nominates Mariana Nieto to serve an additional 3-year term
      2. The EC nominates Dillon Heter to serve an additional 3-year term
      3. The EC nominates Jon Dunham to serve a 2-year term to replace Marlene Merrill

Webber asked for nominations from the participants for the remaining 3-year term. There were no nominations from the participants.  The nominated slate was voted in unanimously.  There is one position open on the Executive Committee.

  1. Questions from members
    1. Noisy cars and motorcycles are a problem. In France they have a system of sound meters and automatic cameras that efficiently ticket offenders.  Couldn’t we have such a system here?  Webber encouraged the member to speak before the Multi Modal Transportation Commission and the City Commission and suggest this solution.  Noise concerns should be reported to the non-emergency police dispatch.     2. Speeding and cut-through on Holiday is habitual. Increased Police presence and enforcement are required.  Webber stated that part of the funding for the Neighborhood Traffic Management program was for enforcement, in addition to mitigation efforts.   He described the recent survey of the membership and stated that the results indicate our collector streets are of greatest concern to those completing the survey.  KDOT crash data shows highest number of crashes on Ninth and Crestline.  He encouraged the meeting participants to get involved with the neighborhood’s application for funding in early 2022.
